Fear of flying has been seen as a rite of passage for air travelers, but there are lots of things that you can do to reduce the anxiety. In this post, we will give you our tips to make flying a more comfortable moment.
As we love to travel and see the world, we need to take the plane sometimes. For Sander, this isn't a problem at all, but Siouxsie has a lot of fear of flying. In this post we will tell you what we do, to help minimize this fear. If you have any more tips or advice, let us know! :)
When you are terrified of flying, your mantra is: "I want to stay away from the airport!" But there is something you can do to make this flight more enjoyable. Here are some tips.
Music can be part of the process, but not just background music. Choose the type of music that fits your mood and activity. For example, we made a whole list with all kinds of songs that reminded us of going on vacation, summer vibes, and just songs that made us happy. It helped me a lot because it lays my focus on the music, not on the sound of the motor.
2. Know that turbulence isn't dangerous.
A lot of people panic when there's a lot of turbulence. But actually, turbulence is normal, it's just the plane reacting on the difference in temperature or the wind. You can compare it when the feeling you have when you are at the sea. When a wave comes, your body floats with the wave up and down... It's the same with the airplane.
3. Control your breathing.
When I feel that I'm getting more stressed on the airplane or just before take-off, I start to do breathing exercises. I always breathe in 4 seconds and breath out for 6 seconds. Just focus on your breathing and you will feel that your muscles will relax.
4. Visualizing is key.
When you have a fear of flying, your thoughts mind sound like this: "This might be my last trip." Just visualize what you will do after the flight. When we flew to La Palma, I always kept on visualizing the Canary potatoes with aioli and a glass of white wine with it. I also thought of everything we would do during our trip.
5. Distract yourself
Distract yourself by doing funny things: watch a movie, play a game, read a magazine. With take-off, I always hold Sander's hand :)
